Name : Eunice Tay Gek Sie

Y.O.R.B (year of rugger birth) : 1998

Rucking with Blacks since : 2001

There’s something good to be said about Ah Lian Friends™ – they’re inherently nice. Most will share their stuff with you. Many will hold your hair back when you up-chuck the contents of your stomach after a hard night of partying. Some will even give you fashion advice, whether brilliant or ill-conceived. And then there are those who will gladly step all over an opponent in a ruck after they’ve witnessed said opponent give you a high tackle only a moment before (And somehow get away without a yellow card).

Yes folks, it is always great to have an Ah Lian Friend™ on your side, especially when you play rugby. Despite having to put up with public flatulence (‘Got warning one ok! Somemore will say if smelly or not…’), flagrant butt-scratching and underwear adjustments, candid declarations of why she no longer goes for all-night cycling (‘@^## &*# pain lah…’), and visual assaults in the form of pink hearts and outrageous hair, Eunice is worth her weight in gold when you step onto the field with her.

Locked in an impossible-to-deck maul? Eunice will be there to rip the ball out. Clueless after being knocked senseless in a tackle? Eunice will be roving and playing Nintendo™, directing you where to go and what to do. Need someone to create opportunities in attack? Eunice will sell a dummy and go on a break. Can’t convert your try? Eunice will punt that ball between the goalposts for you.

Off the field, Eunice’s eclectic appeal remains wide-reaching - she has her own ALF™ understudy, flaunted her figure in national newspapers, and is amazingly popular PE lecturer with the ah bengs and ah lians at ITE East. I mean, you have to be really something to make a teenage mob sweat and mess up their carefully groomed coiffures in the name of physical fitness AND stay off their hate list at the same time. Respect.

Like all good things, it is better to experience it than to read about it. Engage Eunice in a rugby game or a conversation sometime and you will see what I mean…

How did you get introduced to rugby?

Introduce to touch rugby when I was in poly then to rugby when i was in Northern Knights.

Which year did you start playing?

Play touch in 1998 then rugby in 1999.

Year you joined Blacks.

I think its 2001 or 2002. can't really remember. The year we went up to Perth.

What positions have you played? (7s and 15s)

for 7s, play stand off and winger but i also play hooker or prop. In short, i can play in all positions. (hahahah) for 15s, stand off or full back.

List the competitions you played.

Bangkok 7s, Hong Kong 7s, Asian 7s, 15s competition in Bangkok last year.

Which is your most cherished memory in competition?

That will be Bangkok 7s 2002 when we won the Australia Navy Team. Cos we really fought all the way and we won all the team who are twice our size!!!! No FEAR!!! hehe. And another one will be the last year Asian7 which was played in s'pore. Homeground mah.....

What other sports do you play, past & present?

I used to run for school, netball, bowling. But my school very lousy one, not really into sports. Now, still playing rugby and tennis.

Your legendary farts: what do you think causes them? Which was the most embarrassing?

The thing is I don't shit everyday, and that's why i keep farting. Disgesting problem. But very weird lah, sometimes shit liao also can fart. hahaha. But Ennie's fart is the most power power one!! Most embarrassing?? I don't think so. cos farting is very common. and i always give warning before I fart. Or give warning and fart at the sametime. hahaha. People now start to call me Fartimah. hah
haaha. Once i was sleeping with my friends, and one of them even got woken up by my fart smell. hahahhaa!!

Your hairstyles/hair color: list the different ones you've had. Where do you get your inspiration from?

I have really really short hair before, long hair(but long hair cannot make it). I believe in different hairstyles. I want to try all the hairstyle when I’m young and not when I’m old. hahaha. Rebonded hair I also have, but also cannot make it.

Lastly, i always want to perm my hair like the one that i have now. not too bad right.... haha. Inspiration from?? hmm..... don't have lah, just try. Must try everything lah. Am now thinking what hairstyle should I do next. haha. But most importantly, the hairstylist is very important.

Your major concussion: tell us about it.

Wah lau... so many years already still wana say ah??? Ok ok, the 1st tour with blacks in Perth, i was concussed twice in one game. I was tackled and was concussed, then I get up play again. I went to tackle someone and concussed again. What I know is, I keep crying and crying... and keep asking the same questions again and again. Like, where am i?? Did we win?? Who are my roomates?? there's is 2 more questions I can't remember. Ask Siew Chin, she will know. Anyway, all these were mentioned to me when I got woken up from my concussion. Until now, i can't remember what exactly happened!!!??!!

What would you be playing if not for rugby?

"If not for rugby, i should be a professional tennis player. hahhahahahaha. or maybe big lian in the east. haha. "

Do you coach touch/rugby? Where?

Last time, I always help Serena with her SAJC. But ever since i was transferred to Simei, i have not time. I just started coaching TJC this year. I also started to coach tennis.

How do you deal with your ahbeng ahlian kia in ITE?

hmmmm... just behave like lian or beng with them lor!!! haha. They kwai lan, i even more kwai lan lah!!! Who scare who??

What drives you in rugby? Especially when the going gets tough?

I believe is the people around me and the game itself. Teammates, passion keep me going. And in rugby, can whack opponents. Ah lian outside cannot do it.

To you, what is the best thing about rugby?

"The best thing about rugby is my teammates. We all play with our hearts out!!!
Lots of hearts!!! "
And of cos can exercising and keep fit lor. If no rugby, I sure become very fat.

Who is your rugby hero? Why?

My rugby hero is our own Mdm Serena Yeoh aka Mrs Tong. Ever since i started playing rugby, I always look up to her. She is so fit, so strong, so confident, mentally so strong when she plays. See the tackle she made, so power!!! And just like me (hahah), she put in 110% in every game!!! So full of passions and heart. Heart is the word!!! To all the young girls, you gals have to learn that!!

What is your life's motto?

Ah lian where got life's motto one!!! hahhaa... just live everyday happily can liao lor!! Wake up with a smile and the rest of the day will be bright. hehehe!!! Always think positive. Wanna do anything now, better go try, go for it. If not, die liao wait wanna regret also cannot regret.
